"That's not fair!"

We've all said it. We've all experienced it. In fact, sometimes we are even faced with the difficult reality that life is not fair.

In Matthew 20, we read the Parable of the Vineyard Workers. It is one of those parables that has a somewhat difficult conclusion to accept. Probably because almost anyone who reads it can relate to that sentiment... "that's not fair!" If you aren't familiar with it, stop now and check it out (Matthew 20:1-16).

How could it even be remotely fair to give those that have worked so little the exact same amount as those that have labored all day?

The answer... in my opinion... is that it will never seem fair to us. To people. To people who have feelings and emotions. Why? Because each and every one of us has feelings and emotions that drive us. And it won't compute in our heads that someone who worked less could be deserving of the same reward. Unless...

Unless we look at people through the eyes of God. Not through the eyes of a person filled with feelings and emotions... but through the eyes of a God filled with mercy, grace and love. The reward for the laborers was the gift of the man who owned the vineyard. It was never theirs to distribute. Let God be the one to decide who gets what and how much. I think He knows what he's doing.

“So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.”
